Opening the Conversation

Starting a conversation about the EU can feel awkward or tense. That’s why we’ve created simple, non-confrontational openers to help you gently explore what someone values, feels, or wonders about Europe.

-
“What do you think the UK gained or lost from Brexit?”
-
“If we had another vote on EU membership, would you vote the same way?”
-
“How do you think EU laws actually affected the UK day-to-day?”
-
“Do you feel better informed now than during the referendum?”
-
“Has your view on the EU changed since 2016?”
-
“What matters more to you — sovereignty or economic ties?”
-
“Do you think the EU understands Britain?”
-
“Would you support closer UK-EU cooperation in specific areas?”
-
“Do you trust the UK press to cover EU topics fairly?”
-
“Do you think rejoining is even possible — and what would it take?”

How to Use These Starters:
-
Listen actively: Pay attention. Be ready to ask follow-up questions based on their responses. This shows you’re genuinely interested in understanding their perspective.
-
Stay calm and curious: Don’t rush or argue. The goal isn’t to win, but to create space for understanding.
-
Don’t judge: Even if their answers frustrate you, try to remain empathetic. People often respond more positively when they feel heard, even if their opinions are different.
